BEHIND THE SCENES: Producing a fashion editorial in lockdown

So, as I mentioned in a recent post, my first year of university has been far from normal. For my current project this semester we have been asked to create a fashion magazine including 2 editorials and 2 articles. That means 2 photoshoots, in lockdown. Difficult, I know. But as a creative student we have to learn to problem solve so I guess that’s what I did.
Okay, let me talk you through my photoshoot I did for my 2nd editorial called, groundhog days are over. So, when I come up with an idea for a shoot, I create 2 mood boards; one a general mood board of the theme and setting and the other an outfit inspiration board so that I can start to plan outfits out. For this editorial I wanted the setting to be a field in the middle of nowhere and ideally on a sunny day. The brief for the editorial was to produce 8 styled photographs therefore I chose to include 2 models in 4 sets of outfits. As I am currently working from home and not at university, I had to use myself for one of the models and my friend Amie for the other. This, in the end, worked out really well because Amie knew exactly what I wanted and was also able to help me out with the outfits which was great.

So, there we were in a field with my brothers taking the photographs. Something I like to do before the shoot though is to plan out outfits. Sometimes these may change if I think they don’t look right together but this time they all matched perfectly and provided the look I wanted to create. This is where the mood boards come in to give me a clear idea of what I want which then makes it easier to choose outfits. As there were 2 of us in this shoot it was a little harder to think of outfits and match them together but luckily me and Amie have a very similar wardrobe which helped a lot. One piece of advice I would give is to just take lots of photos. You won’t use them all but at least when you get home you know you will have what you need and that’s definitely better than not having enough. Plus, that means more funny outtakes right?
Overall, I was incredibly happy with the results of this shoot and am excited to see the final images in my magazine. If you want to see more of this, follow my fashion account on Instagram @ysabellejdesign. But for now, enjoy some outtakes down below. Thanks for reading!
